Christopher Benfey’s work (Degas in New Orleans: Encounters in the Creole World of Kate Chopin and George Washington Cable) is not accurate, and he misreports what I wrote. His recent concert, A Decade of Joyful Singing, was beyond praise. It is a subtle effect, but very nice when used. Before he died, he attended a dinner where the host proposed a toast to “the most famous composer,” implying Brahms, who replied, “Quite right. The other country he is associated with is France, his father being French and Chopin moving to Paris and spending much of his creative life there.
